 Agents of Shield:
Tuesday night hosted the pilot episode of ABC's new show A.G.E.N.T.S of Shield.  After a summer of hype if this show was a dud there were going to be alot of disappointed fans.

We were not disappointed - and if social media can be trusted - the large majority of the 12 million viewers (with a 4.7 in the golden demographic & a spectacular 14 share) are thrilled with how things played out.

There is so much to love about this show if you are a superhero fan (and even if you aren't) - the call backs to the marvel universe were laced throughout the show, but they weren't so thickly applied that if you didn't have a clue about the movies or the characters or marvel verse in general that you would be lost. It was just the right amount to thrill the ready made fan base and not enough to alienate the new folks.

I did see a few naysayers who were saying it was a bit over the top - and yes it was if you tuned in expecting to see something akin to NCIS or White Collar or Burn Notice - it's a superhero genre - of course the characters are going to be a bit over the top - know what you are watching and don't expect it to be anything other than what it is.

There was plenty of action, humor, mythology and syfy to go around.

I am head over heels in love with the characters of Fitz and Simmons (FitzSimmons as they are loving called) because they are a "unit".  They are delightfully nerdy, geeky, and best of all British - I could listen to them talk all night long.  I love Melinda May even though we didn't get to see much of her in the pilot episode - I hope that changes - she is all kinds of ninja warrior awesome.

Coulson - no words necessary if you are in the Verse - otherwise - you are missing out by not knowing who he is.... take my word for it.

I am less in love with the 2 leads - Agent Grant and Sky - I hope they grow on me. I can see the show playing to the shippers with these two, but I really hope they don't go that route.

Very excited to see if they can maintain and grow their boo yah viewers (their numbers right out of the gate are the 4th highest on TV for a pilot episode).

NCIS:
I did end up watching my DVRed NCIS and I was very disappointed with the episode.  I don't  want to go into detail with my issues because I don't want to come across as a bitter fan who got burned by the show and now hates everything about it because that's not the case at all.  I have simply moved on emotionally and now can watch and really "see" the faults where before I didn't want to.

The episode ratings were the 3rd highest NCIS premiere with 20.2 million viewers but with a dismal 3.6 rating and only a 11 share.

I predict that next week's episode (Ziva's farewell) will be one of the highest rated of the series - they sure are promoting the heck out of it and I know it's the last hurrah for Ziva fans and Tiva fans.

I think the NCIS folks should be a little worried about AoS.  I know that the difference of 8 million viewers is a pretty comfy buffer, but I am very curious to see how the ratings are affected when the new rating systems go into place later this fall.  The old antiquated and (most say) inaccurate Nielson system is getting a reboot and further more shows watched on other media such as ipads and phones and will be counted as well as DVR data.  The fans are more tech sauvy and the system is just now catching up.  Also some folks are specualting the Nielson families will be changed out with the reboot (it's a big secret as to how often the families are changed) so "habitual" viewing may also affect the ratings as new viewing blood comes into play.

Alot of folks forget that unless you are in the "family" - your viewing habits don't count -  a reboot is needed.

Castle:
I spent the summer catching up on the five seasons of Castle and last night was my first live viewing of the show.

I have caught snippets of different episodes, but never a whole episode (and frankly what I saw during those snippets didn't inspire me to watch further).

But a dear friend gently but firmly twisted my arm into a promise to watch. The first two seasons were not okay - I had to literally force myself through some episodes because I kept comparing the show to NCIS and Castle/Beckett to Tony/Ziva and in my shipper fangirl heart there was no comparison. Besides Beckett's hair and wardrobe were bothering me - she looked like a school marm - not the hot sexy detective that everyone was talking about. When I watched Rick Castle I only saw the Captain from Firefly. I was clearly missing something.

About half way through the 3rd season the show seemed to find a rhythm and I soon found myself immersed in the Castle world.

The comparisions to NCIS continued, but this time NCIS came out on the losing side. Castle episodes were cohesive, fun, dramatic and not full of plot holes big enough to drive a chevy through. Andrew Marlow is a heck of show runner and after watching 5 seasons in rather quick succession I can say I didn't see one retconn and while the Castle/Beckett pairing has had it's ups and downs - both professionally and personally - the storyline was never angst for angst sake. Every obstacle served the purpose of moving them forward both as individuals and as a couple.

And while I can't say that I ship them (I think T/Z has ruined me for shipping) I want very much for them to succeed. Castle and Beckett are the main characters - no doubt about that; but the supporting characters get alot of meaty scenes and I love the bromance between Esposito and Ryan - they are such fun to watch. They play off each other great and there is none of the snark that NCIS uses to get a laugh. Refreshing.

I am looking forward to the new season and I think I just might have found a new favorite show. Time will tell - but it's looking good.

The BlackList:
Airs on NBC opposite Castle, so I DVRed it. I saw the promo for the show earlier this summer (my post from 07/27/13) and it looked... interesting so I added it to my must see list.

I watched it after Castle and I have to say James Spader is campy, creepy fun. This will stay on my DVR for the foreseeable future and fans seem to agree to me. The social media buzz for this show today has been off the wall and it won in it's time slot in both total viewers and the golden demographic.

I think this show is going to give Castle a run for the viewers week after week and that is good news for the fans as both shows should be bringing their A game to the 10:00 p.m. Monday night time slot.

Tonight I am settling in with A.G.E.N.T.S of Shield and NCIS on my DVR. I don't know when and if I will ever watch the NCIS episode, but the Ziva fan part of me insists that I record it just in case. Besides, with things like this happening
Spoilery )
My shipper heart might demand it later on down the road - when then the pain has dulled and maybe I don't care quite as much.

I hope you all are enjoying your new Fall shows; I will be back tomorrow with my thoughts on AOS.

Whoa!
Adding this to my DVR.
When I kicked NCIS to the must see TV curb - I was worried that I wouldn't find anything to fill the void - looks like those fears were unfounded.
So much to look forward to this season.  I like it!

who is expecting a baby boy with boyfriend David Paul Olsen (brother of co- star Eric Christian Olsen).

the rumors have been rampant for weeks, but Daniela confirmed it this morning.

I mentioned in passing on Monday (at a holiday pool party) that we hadn't had a chance to cut back our thicket of Rose of Sharons this summer.

The thicket is lush and full and very beautiful, but it blocks the breeze and the view from our gazebo... and we have to trim them back several times during the summer because they grow like crazy.

I came home today from work and Lesia had trimmed them!

I love her!

Life has been pretty status quo the last few weeks.  Nothing new and amazing to report and nothing really to rant and rage about.  I guess that's a good thing - it just doesn't make for a very exciting blog.

Hope everyone is doing okay!

Starting another yoga 30 day challenge on Sept 1.

In conjunction with my 1/2 marathon training - I will have no life.

Good thing I gave up fandom!

dragonheart: (Zombies)
You can totally blame this brainchild on [personal profile] ophelias_heart from this post in [personal profile] proseac 's journal.

It seems that I am lacking in having a Zombie Apocalypse (PIP) Plan in Place - because we all know it's not a matter of if, but when the zombies will be lurching onto our doorsteps.

I am guessing that I am not the only one deficient in this area, so it might be fun to develop our plans together.  Are we gonna hunker down in our well stocked and fortified safe places and wait it out or will we be on the front lines ready to sacrifice blood (and possibly brains) in defense of home and loved ones?

While we are at it we might as well throw in some fic with our beloved characters meeting up with the zombies.

How would Team Gibbs fare against the zombie hordes?  I can totally see LA's Hetty kicking butt and taking names in a one woman battle against the undead.  What would happen if a Time Lord encountered a zombie army?  Could Coulson and his Agents shield mankind against impending doom?  We know Castle and Beckett have experience when it comes to zombies, so maybe a cross-over fic is in order.

If there is a hard and fast rule about zombies - it is that there are NO rules, so we can make this is as serious or as cracky as we want.

How about it?  Are you in?

Starting the day at 7:30 a.m. with yoga (I love early morning yoga, unfortunately Saturday is the only day that I can do it) followed by more "me time" with a mani/pedi.

Thats where the fun ends as the rest of the day will be spent doing the drudgeries of yard work, laundry and grocery shopping.  The yard work and the laundry are okay, but the grocery shopping is a hateful chore. Cooking for two is hard and I haven't gotten a handle on it even after two years.

Cooking for one or ten is easier than two.  I either cook too much and we have left overs that never get eaten or I don't cook enough and my husband ends up eating crap because he is still hungry.

We have no plans for the evening and I hope it stays that way.  My son is coming home with tales from his east coast driving vacation and then I just want to stay in and relax with a good book and a good bottle of wine.

I hope you all have a great Saturday!

You Should Have Been Born in the Autumn

You are an idealistic but also hard working person. You want to make the world a better place.

It's likely that you have a list of causes that you support - and a plan for advancing all of them.

You are a natural leader and organizer. You naturally sort out chaos and figure out what the first steps are.

You are confident in your abilities, but you also always have a contingency plan. Failure is not an option for you.

You know what you believe, and you are resistant to changing your mind. Others may find you frustratingly stubborn.

If you don't like how something is going, you're likely to take it over. You know you'll do a better job.

I am getting some friendly pressure from my BF to run in next years 1/2 marathon for the Derby Festival and I really don't want to do it.  Mainly because I am lazy.

Maybe lazy isn't the right word.  I am NOT physically prepared to run 11.1 miles (I know some of you can do that in your sleep) and I don't have the time nor the inclination to train for it.  Gone are the days when I could just "do it".  The race is next April and while that seems far off - believe me I will need all that time and then some to get my runners legs back.  I will have to train and train hard.  I haven't run in over a year and it's been months since my bike has seen the light of day.  I have been on a yoga binge and that is where my work out quota has been spent. As great as Bikram is - it won't prepare you for a half marathon.  I am flexible and lean and feel strong - but it's a different kind of strong than what I need for running.  Night and day.

I can't believe I am stressing over this so much - I should just say no and mean it.

dragonheart: (Excited)
You guys know me - I am always on the look out for new shows to watch as I quickly lose interest in most of the drabble that passes for TV these days.

It's a vicious cycle - I see something that looks promising, I get excited, I watch a few episodes - and If I am really lucky I hang for the whole season.  More likely than not I am out by mid season or before.

For me - great TV must have 2 things - good storytelling and compelling characters.  If the show just has one or the other, it may hold me for a while, but eventually the inevitable happens: Remote off.

Good storytelling is basic (or you would think it would be).  I am not expecting Gilgamesh epicness  week to week - just something that is consistent, believable and entertaining.  Compelling characters would also seem pretty basic.  I don't have to like the characters (Game of Thrones is a case in point - there are only a handful of characters that I like - the rest are pretty much despicable) but for me likablility has never equaled compelling.  Another case in point is the character of Branch on (my newest obsession) Longmire.  He is set up as the foil to good guy Walt - but there is just something about him (being ruggedly handsome & built like a brick house doesn't hurt) that I like.

Fall 2013 was looking pretty drab for me with the loss of NCIS.  A friend sent me the 5 seasons of Castle (just finished S2), but the show just hasn't grabbed me the way I was hoping it would.  I haven't given up because several people have told me that they didn't fall in love with the show until S3 or S4. Maybe its because my shipper heart is still tender & I am protecting myself or maybe I just need time to development my relationship with it. I didn't fall in love with NCIS right away either. Reading the tweets from the cast gives me hope. Crossing my fingers!

One of the bright spots on the horizon is the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and with this weeks announcement that Cobie Smulders will be reprising her movie role (on a guest starring level) as Agent Maria Hill, it just moved up a few notches on my list.  I am hoping when Cobie's stint ends on HIMYM (another one of those shows I loved and lost) after this season, that she will move into a permanant role.  I think this show will be giving NCIS a run for the Tuesday night viewership especially from that much coveted of demographics and given the response out of SDCC, NCIS should be worried.  Another factor is the Avengers 2 movie coming out in 2015 and the draw of the Marvel universe in general.  This show comes with a ready made audience and fanbase.  Unless they mess it up big time (and they could), it's going to be a success. Another plus?  This is a show that my husband and son will watch with me.  Bonus.

Right now the brightest star on my fall viewing list is a show that I didn't even know about until last night.

Yeap, I saw the trailer last night and fell in TV love.  Karl Urban is the reason.  If you are familiar with Karl, I don't need to explain.  If you aren't familiar with him, I suggest a little research - you won't be sorry.  :)

Here's the trailer that got my attention - Fox's Almost Human starring Karl Urban and Michael Ealy from the mind of J J Abrams.

And if that doesn't convince you - let's throw in Lili Taylor and Minka Kelly to boot.

This seems to satisfy all my scifi fangirl requirements as well.  I can see a fandom break out in it's future.

I am crossing all available appendages that this show lives up to my expectations!

September suddenly doesn't seem so depressing.
